Concussion Information
The Haltom High School Athletic Training Staff follows the recommendations of Texas HB 2038We work in close contact with the physicians at the following offices but you are more than welcome to choose your own concussion trained physician. Concussion Take ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ Info
Report to hospital immediately if any of the following symptoms occur:
- Headaches or neck pain that worsens
- Bleeding or clear fluid draining from the nose or ears
- Blurred or double vision
- Weakness in the arms and or legs
- Pupils that do not react to changes in light
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Decreasing level of consciousness/ a loss of consciousness
- Confusion, irritability, unusual drowsiness, amnesia (inability to recall names and places)
Treatment: It is OK to:
- Rest (nothing that raises your heart rate/makes you sweat)
- Observe your child
- Take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) in over the counter doses
- For a minimum of 72 hours or until otherwise advised: no video games, TV, cell phone (only talking permitted, no texting or emails), iPod, computer use
- While still experiencing symptoms limit use of TV, cell phone, and iPod to 30 minute segments every 4 hours
- Return to school following the advice of the athletic training staff
- Rest/Sleep as much as possible
- Make sure to consistently eat which includes all normal meals as well as including snacks throughout the day
There is NO NEED to:
- Check eyes with flashlight
- Wake up every hour
- Test reflexes Stay in bed
DO NOT:
- Take aspirin
- Drink alcohol
- Drink energy drinks or other drinks with caffeine
